Garden Commercial Properties has signed a lease with Kohl’s Department Stores to occupy 89,000 square feet at Newburgh Plaza, the open air retail center in this Orange County, N.Y. Town.

The free-standing building will replace the former Lloyd’s Department Store at the shopping center, which is being redeveloped as part of Newburgh Plaza’s second retail phase, according to David Malitzky, Director of Development for the Short Hills, N.J. based developer.

Demolition of the old structure has already begun and construction on the new building is scheduled to begin in April.

“The Lloyd’s building had become a public eyesore, sitting vacant on this property for almost a decade,” says Joseph Korn, Vice-President of Development for Garden Commercial Properties.  “We identified this as the ideal opportunity to turn an underutilized site into an exciting retail destination which will serve shoppers from throughout the Hudson Valley.”

Kohl’s will join Home Depot at the shopping center, indicates Michael Gartenberg, Garden Commercial’s Director of Leasing.

Situated on a 32-acre site at the intersection of Old Little Britain Road and Route 300 in Newburgh, Newburgh Plaza is easily reached from Routes 84, 87 and 17K.
